They are often confused, and yet almost everything separates them — except, precisely, the way they are made. Here is how to tell **Crémant and Champagne** apart and choose well.

## What they share: the traditional method

Crémant and Champagne rely on the same technique: a **second fermentation in the bottle** that creates the bubbles (the _prise de mousse_). It is this process, explained in our article on [how Champagne is made](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/blog/comment-est-fait-le-champagne/), that produces the effervescence.

## The key differences

Champagne

Crémant

**Origin**

Only the Champagne region (AOC)

Other regions: Alsace, Burgundy, Loire, Limoux…

**Grape varieties**

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier (mainly)

Vary by region

**Minimum ageing**

15 months (3 years for a vintage)

9 months as a rule

**Average price**

Higher

More affordable

The word **“Champagne” is protected**: only the sparkling wine produced within the delimited Champagne area, following a strict set of rules, may carry the name. Elsewhere, it is called Crémant (or another local name).

## Which one to choose?

- **For an everyday aperitif or a large number of guests**, a good Crémant offers excellent value for money.
- **For a special occasion, a gift or a food pairing**, Champagne brings greater complexity and longer ageing.

So it is not a question of which is “better”, but of use and budget. To fine-tune your choice on the Champagne side, read [best Champagne: how to choose it](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/blog/meilleur-champagne/).

## And the taste?

Thanks to its longer ageing and its chalky terroir, a Champagne often develops more **complexity** (brioche notes, minerality). A Crémant tends to be more **direct and fruity**. The best way to form your own opinion is to compare them in a tasting: see our [tours and tastings](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/visites-degustations/) and our [glossary](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/glossaire/) for the vocabulary.
