To discover the vineyards beyond the town-centre houses, there’s nothing like following the **Champagne tourist routes**. Signposted through hillsides and winegrowing villages, they can be explored by car, by bike or on an organised tour.

## 1\. The Montagne de Reims route

Running between Reims and Épernay, it crosses a **mosaic of grands crus** and forests. Along the way you’ll come across renowned villages, viewpoints over the plain and many **winegrowers** open for tastings. A must for lovers of **pinot noir**.

## 2\. The Marne Valley route

It follows the river from east to west, through steeper slopes where **pinot meunier** reigns. Picturesque villages, panoramas over the valley and family-run houses punctuate the journey. It’s also the route of the historic birthplace of champagne, around Hautvillers.

## 3\. The Côte des Blancs route

South of Épernay, it winds through the heart of **chardonnay** country. Its villages give rise to the finest **blanc de blancs**. Open, luminous landscapes, perfect for a wine-tasting outing.

## And the Côte des Bar?

Further south, in the Aube, the **Côte des Bar** forms a fourth gateway to the vineyards, with a terroir all of its own. A still-unspoilt area, ideal for getting off the beaten track.

To place these terroirs on the map, see our section on [the vineyards and terroirs](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/vignoble-terroirs/).

## Tips for exploring the routes

- **Appoint a designated driver**: each stop may include a tasting.
- **Book** your visits with the winegrowers, often by appointment (see the [directory](https://champagne-discovery-tours.com/en/maisons/)).
- **Alternate** between a large house and a small grower to vary the experiences.
